Varsity Baseball fought off a worthy opponent in Sequoia Pathway on Saturday at Surprise Stadium. The Eagles beat the Pumas 6-5 in the CAA State Championship game to finish their season at 21-0, giving the school their third state championship of the day (Golf, Girls Soccer) and seventh overall.
Gavin Wyzlic delivered a monster triple deep to center field in the bottom of the sixth, and scored the go ahead run giving the Eagles a 6-5 lead going into the last inning. Wyzlic would earn player of the game honors. Sequoia threatened in the top half of the seventh putting the tying run on third, but pitcher Dawson Morris and catcher Taggart Caskey proved too much for the Pumas as Caskey put the “tag” on the final out securing the victory for ALA Gilbert. Morris struck out 11 for the Eagles and kept the Pumas off balance much of the night.
Kellen Walsh delivered a big two out, two run hit for the Eagles in the third after a balk by Sequoia’s pitcher allowed a run to score and runners to advance into scoring position.
